Teachers are hoping other states such as Victoria will follow the lead of New South Wales and commit to the Federal Government’s Gonski education overhaul.

Yara Murray-Atfield reports

“Premier Barry O’Farrell announced the state’s commitment to the reforms yesterday, confirming five billion dollars’ worth of funding from the Federal Government. The Australian Education Union’s Deputy President Corrina Haythorpe says they welcome the news and hope to see the rest of the nation follow suit. ‘Well we welcome the news that New South Wales’ state government has committed to the Gonski schools funding reforms because we believe it’s a historic breakthrough in the way that our schools are funded. What’s needed now is for all of the other states and territories to get on board and sign up to Gonski.’ State and territory leaders have until the end of June to pledge their support for the Gonski reforms, which will be partially funded through higher education cuts.
