5 best HSP joints in Melbourne

Written by Yasmin Khushairi

Gone are the days party people go to fast food restaurants to sober up after a wild night out. Or if you are a night owl staying in having a tame night by yourself or some friends and suddenly crave for fattening late night snack. Where to next? HSP!

Halal Snack Pack (HSP) has taken Australia (if not the world) by storm. The mountainous chips, cheese and meat with overflowing (literally) sauces on top at very cheap and reasonable prices. This guilty pleasure is worth the trip and finger-licking good..because it’s so huge that you can’t even close the lid and the sauces will drip off onto your fingers.

The hype is so real that there is a Facebook page created called the “Halal Snack Packs Appreciation Society” where over 180 thousand HSP enthusiasts gather and share their common love for the dish. Below are some of the most talked about HSP places in Melbourne.

  1. CBD Kebabs

2/546 Flinders St, Melbourne

Located on Flinders St and one of the most popular HSP places in the city. The queue here is always long especially on weekends. For only $12, you get a mountain of meat and chips with a can of soft drink. Top it off with some garlic and hot chilli sauce and you’re good to go. No matter how cold the weather is, it’s worth the wait.

  1. Viva Kebabs

3/546 Flinders St, Melbourne

The next door neighbour giving them a run for their money. Also always have a long queue and customers hanging around waiting for their numbers to be called, super generous chunk of meat with a can of soft drink also for $12 and will keep you full for the rest of the day. Or night.

  1. Queen’s Kebabs

26 King St, Melbourne

Located on King St, CBD, this joint is a proper restaurant with seatings and speakers for customers to dine-in if they choose to. Rated 5 stars on Facebook, customers get fast service, again a mountainous pack and enjoy the music.

  1. Lambs on Richmond

For this one, I’m going to let this man do the talking.

423 Church St, Richmond

  1. Oz Kebabs

790 Nicholson St, Fitzroy North

This stand-alone shop is located in Fitzroy North with limited seatings and plenty carpark spaces. The place is famous for the man behind the counter who is very friendly, chatty and playful with the customers. Generous amount of food, always fresh and tasty. It’s my all-time favourite HSP joint.
