Have a fling this spring with these beauty trends

Say goodbye to the winter blues and hello to having a spring in your step. The weather is finally warming up and as a result, so are the colours in your makeup bag.

Spring beauty this year is all about fronting a fresh face with subtle hints of pink and orange on the lips and cheeks for a sweeter than sweet look.

City Journal’s beauty-obsessed Jessica-Anne Lyons lets you in on what the top three beauty looks for spring are and what products we recommend to try these trends for yourself.

#1 Peachy keen

Time to put away your rouges and rose blushes and have a taste of citrus hues on your cheeks. The popular shade this spring is soft, orange-toned peach which is a universally flattering shade.

If opting for a powder blush, with a soft blush brush, gently sweep the product onto your cheeks, focusing the colour on the apples of your cheeks then blending outwards and up towards your temples.

For longer-lasting cheek colour, try a liquid cheek stain. Stains achieve a more natural flushed look than a powder and are even easier to apply. All you do is dab a drop or two of the stain onto the apples of your cheeks, then with your fingertips, blend the pigment along your cheekbones.

#2 Stained smooch

Bold, matte lipsticks are taking a back seat in favour of sheer lip stains for just a hint of colour. The great thing about lip stains is that they require little precision to apply and stay vibrant without reapplying longer than lipsticks. Think pink – especially baby pink – for lips this season for a natural, yet oh-so-pretty look.

You can try a traditional lip stain, which often comes in retractable crayon style packaging or in a lip balm. The crayon styles provide more colour payoff, so the look will be a lot brighter than a tinted lip balm. However a balm also has the added benefits of moisturizing your lips, similar to a Chap Stick.

#3 Sweet scent

Skip the obvious floral perfumes this season and opt for something a little sweeter. Try subtle candy and fruity scents that appeal to your sweet tooth. A lot of the new fragrance releases this spring have had scents similar to desserts – yes, you read that right! Popular fragrance notes this season include honey, cinnamon, citrus fruits, vanilla and caramel. Scents for this spring are definitely ones to savour!

To make the most of your spritz of scent, apply your fragrance to the warm spots of your body. Try behind your ears, the curve between your neck and collarbone, your wrists, the inner parts of your elbows and behind your knees. Perfume reacts to your body heat and by spraying those areas, you’re ensuring the longevity of your scent and it will smell even nicer than usual.
