Police set to interview Pell

Written by Chanel Kinniburgh

Victoria Police are yet to rule out flying to Rome to interview Cardinal George Pell over allegations of child sex abuse uncovered in July.

It is understood Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana is assessing whether charges will be laid after evidence was handed over by the Office of Public Prosecutions this week.

“We have received advice from the DPP and will now take the time to consider it,” a police spokeswoman said.

The evidence includes information about alleged historical sexual assaults in Ballarat between 1976 and 1980 and East Melbourne between 1996 and 2001.

Last month two men publicly accused Pell of groping their genitals at Eureka pool, while another said he saw the priest expose himself to young boys at Torquay Lifesaving Club.

Although investigators are yet to confirm whether they will fly to Rome or speak with Cardinal Pell via video link, it is almost certain they will seek to interview him, Fairfax reported.

Cardinal Pell has denied all the claims.
