Ever had one of those weeks when you would just like to get away from the hustle and bustle that is Melbourne’s CBD for a weekend?

You know those times when you feel the city life is dragging you down with stress, and the only thing you want to do is relax, but cannot quite muster a lengthy trip?

Try Red Hill, a cosy rural town situated around the Mornington Peninsula and only an hour away from Melbourne.

Red Hill is famous for its abundance of vineyards and beautiful surrounding bushlands, and also lies a mere 10-minute drive from the beach, should you need a change of scenery.

The Montalto Vineyard and Olive Grove in particular offer a sweet retreat with wine tastings and delicious food, with the option of eating outdoors as you look upon the stunning view of the winery.

The only downside to such highly recommended dining is – of course- the cost, as the main course will charge you between $30 and $40. But for what it is worth, the food may well be worth the price.

However, the idea of wine tastings for a weekend getaway is not for all, and there is more that Red Hill has to offer apart from a good drop.

Taking a walk down the Red Hill Rail Trail surrounds you with the nature of the forest, which is relatively untouched and stretches six and a half kilometres for those who are keen for a ‘leisurely’ stroll.

For the wanderer with cash to splash, the Community Market is an attractive draw, and runs on the first Saturday of the month from September until May. The market offers plenty of fresh and local produce, as well as craftwork and clothing from hundreds of unique and independent stalls.

It could take a lengthy couple of hours to find what you like, but it tends to have something for everyone, and with a mere $4 parking charge, it is well within budget (depending on how much you like at the market).

Make sure to visit the Marion Rosetzky Gallery, nestled within the confines of the very appealing Red Hill bushland. The collection features a great range of textiles and jewellery, and if you are lucky, you may get to meet the artist herself to discuss her work, and mull over your purchase limit while having a cup of coffee, or simply enjoy the art on display.

Red Hill offers a vast array of options for those who are looking for a pleasant couple of days away from the big city surrounds, just to recharge those batteries. Even during the winter months, Red Hill is a quiet, rustic and welcome escape from the city without getting too far away.
