ANZAC Day: A Vietnam Vet’s Perspective

Bill Cornford is a Vietnam War veteran.

He lives in the country and volunteers as a tour guide one day a week at the Shrine of Remembrance.

He says it brings him joy to talk to school children on the tours, as they can comprehend those who have died in war, by listening to tailored war stories on bravery and sacrifice.
Bill Cornford understands ANZAC Day will mean something different to every Australian.

It has not always been a welcoming experience for returning soldiers from the Vietnam War, as, although soldiers were conscripted to serve, the war has been controversial and unpopular.
Interviewed in the Shrine of Remembrance the day before ANZAC Day, Cornford talks to City Journal.

As rehearsals are taking place outside, he discusses some mixed feelings towards ANZAC Day and why he doesn’t take part in the ANZAC Day March.
