Alcohol-fuelled violence is not caused by alcohol itself, according to a research paper by prominent UK anthropologist Doctor Anne Fox. Her report published earlier this year found social and cultural factors influenced the drinker’s behavioural response.
“Our behaviour when drunk is, to a large extent, culturally not chemically determined,” she said in her report. “Most drinkers are unaware that they are enacting a culturally scripted pretence of drunkenness.”
Specialising in the study of drinking cultures around the world, Dr Anne Fox’s report, “Understanding behaviour in the Australian and New Zealand night-time economies” is the compilation of years of study.
