Federal Election 2019

The tax that could sway an electorate

Written by Cormac Pearson

The battle for Menzies could be decided by Labor’s controversial proposed tax that taxes retirees through super savings.

The tax reform was announced in March last year, when Labor also announced the pensioner guarantee as part of the reform, which gives an exemption to pensioners who will continue to receive cash payments.

The current Member for Menzies Kevin Andrews says it will affect the 9,000 retirees in the electorate and could cut those who rely on their super savings up to 20 per cent.

According the 2016 census, around 20 per cent of Menzies are over the age of sixty-five, so expect to see this issue get a lot of media during the campaign trail.
