In a new dawn for the train-less electorate of Menzies, Doncaster is to be included in the Suburban Rail Loop; a $50 billion project that will encircle and connect Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
Expected to start in 2022 for a 2050 completion, the project was part of Premier Daniel Andrews’ bid for reelection in last year’s state election.
Declared as Australia’s “biggest public transport program” in history, the loop was conceived to resolve pressing infrastructural issues such as traffic in the Menzies electorate, aiming to remove 200 thousand vehicles from major roads state-wide by 2051.
Federal Labor has endorsed the plan, and is hoping any goodwill from this state-based idea will filter through to it at the ballot box in May.
