The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has given the green light for the development of a 14-storey high rise in Frankston.
The tower will be built between the Nepean Highway and Kananook Creek, overlooking Port Phillip Bay and contain 94 apartments.
VCAT’s approval is a landmark moment for Frankston’s “Great Wall” development. It comes after months of campaigning from locals who argue waterfront high-rises are not in keeping with the local area.
Creator of “Stop the Great Wall of Frankston” petition Jennifer Young says the tower will “monopolise” the suburb.
“It overshadows the creek in the morning” and “overlooks residents opposite which are primarily in one to two storey buildings,” Young said.
Crucially, the approval will “set a precedent” for more development along Port Phillip Bay, which Young says will “split the suburb in two”.
A similar high-rise apartment adjacent to the tower has already been proposed.
