The gay and lesbian rights lobby call on federal opposition leader Tony Abbott to allow Liberal MPs a conscience vote on gay marriage, following US President Barack Obama’s statement of support for gay marriage in a media interview. Official job figures are expected to show a rise in unemployment, as non-mining sectors struggle. The school kids bonus passes the lower house of parliament, and Victorian unions rally against cuts to TAFE funding.
