Monash University has come under fire from an animal rights group due to the university approving the use of live monkeys in a recent study.

Humane Research Australia says the university’s use of marmosets was unethical, and is calling for a nationwide ban on the use of primates for scientific research.

The research involved probing the brains of live marmosets, in order to monitor their responses to noise while under anaesthetic.

Dr Simon Barrett, the head of Research Ethics and Compliance at Monash University, says that although alternatives are desirable, animal testing is often necessary for scientific advancement.
