Melbourne’s first Korean Wave Festival (KWAVE Fest) was held at Federation Square last weekend to celebrate traditional and modern Korean entertainment, food and culture.
KPOP music has become a cultural phenomenon all around the world and has recently sparked more interest and popularity in Australia.
What is KPOP you say?
It’s all about catchy tunes, funky dance moves, and young and extravagant pop idols:
Those who aren’t familiar with the trend may probably only know Psy’s “Gangnam Style”, but the KWAVE Fest was a showcase for more than just that.
The event included a number of food and exhibit stalls along the River Terrace for visitors to explore and enjoy.
Taking to the stage at Fed Square were some local dance groups performing to their favourite KPOP tracks and a Hanbok (Korean traditional dress) showcase.
SQ Entertainment’s managing partner Helen Le says this was a great way for Melburnians to explore a new culture and a new form of entertainment.
One of the major highlights of the KWAVE Fest was YouTube stars Simon and Martina from Eat Your Kimchi, who hosted a one-hour Q&A session for fans and people who wanted to know more about Korean music and entertainment.
Simon and Martina have lived and breathed Korean culture everyday for more than six years and have an interesting non-Korean perspective of the country.
