With so many movies and so little time, entertainment reporter Stephen McCambridge takes a look at a must see movie, a gem you might have missed, and a film that you might want to give the flick.
What to see – GRAVITY
Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity is as remarkable as floating above the Earth and as exciting as plunging towards it at high speeds. Its epic scale and impressive special effects are all absorbing while the emotional performances of its engaging characters continually bring it back down to Earth.
The film follows a space shuttle team spearheaded by two members, medical engineer Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney).
The pair begins the film outside their spacecraft. Stone is repairing the Hubble Telescope on her very first mission while Kowalsky is on his last spacewalk before retirement.
For a while things are at peace. Kowalsky is enjoying his last day while Stone works hard on her first. But when Houston informs the pair that danger is coming their way in the form of debris from a Russian satellite, things quickly descend into chaos. Disaster strikes and the pair are left floating in space, fighting for their lives.
The story plays out like a thriller and with only each other and unlikely survival for company; the character development is intimate and engrossing.
Whether you’re a space cowboy with a taste for adventure or a moviegoer who seeks a gripping tale, this movie is for you.

Your movie gem – BEHIND THE CANDELABRA
You probably haven’t heard much about Behind the Candelabra but this film is as charismatic and warm as Liberace himself.
Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Scott Thorson, this movie focuses on Thorson’s relationship with Liberace.
But for a movie that no movie studio would fund (it was originally funded by HBO) it has plenty of stars and this is where it thrives.
Michael Douglas portrays the charming, yet complicated, Liberace while Matt Damon brings to life a likeable Thorson, who begins to disintegrate as he plunges into a relationship with the Vegas star.
Both Douglas and Damon perform superbly in their roles and with the focus on the relationship, rather than Liberace’s on-stage life, this film succeeds in making you love, hate and pity both Liberace and Scott as their relationship and lives begin to collapse.
Behind the Candelabra has been running for some time but can still be seen in select cinemas and I suggest you check it out.

Give it the Flick – ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US
OK, I’ll admit that this is a cheap shot but I still can’t recommend you see this movie.
This documentary-musical gives an all-access pass to the British pop sensation, One Direction, live in concert.
And the problem with it is that it automatically divides its potential audience.
People either love or hate One Direction and the same will go with this movie.
My problem with One Direction, both the movie and the band, is that it was commercially cultivated for success.
These five British boys, as talented as they are, are a test tube band that tweens are taught to love.
And One Direction: This is us, is just like handing you a happy meal and telling you to smile.
Harry Styles may have a pretty face and we do all secretly love ‘What makes you beautiful’, but I can really only recommend this film for the most diehard Directioner.
