Kevin Andrews has been in parliament since the 1991 by-election when he replaced former Liberal party senior minister Neil Brown.
Among the portfolios he has held over the years are Ageing, Employment & Workplace Relations, Immigration and Citizenship, Social Services and Defence.
This is the first time he’s been a backbencher in the Liberal government since the 2001 election, but he is the Chairman of both the Joint Standing Committee on the National Disability Scheme and the ‘Human Right’ sub-committee within the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.
Andrews is a member of the Monash Forum – a coalition collective who supports coal-fired power stations and energy security. He is also Advisor to the Board of Life Decisions International where his role is ‘honorary patronage’.
He holds a Bachelor degree at Melbourne University in Arts & Law and a Masters of Law at Monash. Before his election in 1991, he was a practicing barrister for 6 years. This led to him being awarded Australian Young Lawyer of the Year for creating a legal scheme for disaster victims and publishing a book for seniors about law.
