Tapes of our grandmothers

This audio of this slideshow is taken from an hour and a half recording on a cassette tape made in 1991 by my grandmother Margaret Jean Ellis. In it she speaks about living in Egypt and Cyprus during post-war British colonial action.

Throughout the recording she refers to Ian Hastie Ellis, my grandfather, as ‘your father’, this is because the original recording was made between my mother and her mother.

The troubles in Cyprus to which she refers are known as ‘the Cyprus emergency’ in which 371 British service personnel were killed attempting to suppress a Greek Cypriot movement to unify with Greece.

Miss Ellis, before she died, left a folder of photographs and documents about her time in Greece and Egypt.
