Blog Post 1 – Core Values of Journalism

Blog Post 1 – Laura Donaldson

In today’s world, it is essential that journalists possess several core values and apply these to their profession. These values ensure journalists are behaving in a professional and respectful manner, whilst upholding their duty as society’s Fourth Estate.

Curiosity is fundamental among journalists. Without it, exists no desire to peel back layer upon layer to encounter the truth. Journalists must retain a hunger for untold stories and a longing to enlighten the wider community. They must be persistent, and fearless in the pursuit of facts. Journalism is an incredibly competitive industry and ‘first in best dressed’ is very often the reality. The profession requires travelling far and wide to seek out a compelling tale,  early mornings, long days, and very often, inadequate remuneration.  A willingness to go above and beyond is key to achieving success. Respect is paramount, and journalists must be wary of others when investigating. They must respect the law, as well as various members of the public. They must not exploit the vulnerable, and be a voice for marginalised population groups. They must cast light upon issues without ridicule or bias.

Journalists are taking advantage of modern-day technologies that allow them to access information in a more efficient and succinct way.

Curiosity – Many types of technology are employed by journalists to uncover a story and assist with research. Search engines like Google allow journalists to access an endless amount of data, such as birth and death records, court reports, political information, immigration statistics and media releases.

Persistence – Instantaneous communication allows journalist to pursue stories without delay. Telephoning, emailing, and digital media such as Facebook can assist in connecting with others rapidly and sourcing information before other journalists.

Respect – Journalists must be respectful when delivering information to the public. Platforms like Twitter allow the immediate release of information; however this requires caution and accuracy. Fact-checking is important, as it is very difficult to remove information from the internet after publication.  It is also essential that journalist gain permission when using both visual and audio recording devices, and do not publish anything said, ‘off the record’.
