How To Give Good Journo – Post One

Written by Maeve Kerr-Crowley

In my opinion, three of the most important values for journalists in today’s world are integrity, innovativeness, and pluck. All three are vital for creating accurate and engaging journalism.

Journalistic integrity has always been important, but becomes particularly so as we rely more and more on technology. If you don’t care about your story being honest, balanced and respectful to those involved, do you even care about producing ‘good’ journalism? But as the internet becomes one of our most trusted sources for information, the reliability of said information comes into question. When using technology and the internet as tools for journalism, it’s vital to take the time and effort to fact check stories, data and all information to ensure the story you’re putting your name to is the truth.

A good story is a true story, but an entertaining story also needs to be innovative. In order for a story to stand out, you have to be able to think outside the box. Being able to think creatively will allow you to find the best stories, angles and sources to present a piece of media that everybody hasn’t seen before. This is only helped by the invention and development of new technologies, which allow stories to be recorded and broadcast in new and thrilling ways. It’s up to an imaginative journalist to find dynamic and effective ways to use this technology.

And lastly, pluck! A journalist with pluck has the bravery, resilience and persistence to pursue difficult stories and overcome inevitable hurdles. In a competitive and sometimes intimidating industry, it’s about being able to charge in and make the world (and the story) work in your favour. Part of it is about finding ways around issues that arise (hey, innovation again), and part is not crumbling and giving up when you don’t know how to do something. The plucky journalist can take on challenges, learn new skills, and come out on top.
