Week 1 Blog – Core Values

Written by Kasia Kosidlo

While it isn’t so much a stand-alone value, curiosity is definitely something journalists should value. Without this, a major motivating factor for seeking out different stories and perspectives is missing. A genuine interest in learning more about people and the world will give stories, and those writing them, a purpose. This value is necessary when interacting with digital tools and encourages testing their limitations and what they can achieve. In turn, this creates thoughtful and creative journalism. In today’s world, this is what media consumers expect and are willing to support.

Fairness. Journalists have abundant ability to work towards achieving social good but unfortunately, can also perpetuate the opposite. Prioritising fairness assists as a reminder of what is important in this field. When presenting a piece, it’s integral that it is truthful and accurate, otherwise we have no business reporting on matters that shape others’ view of the world. When it comes to fairness and digital media, the availability of technology should be relished as a tool. However, it needs to be kept in mind that not everyone has the same opportunities for access. Using these technologies to provide a voice to those drowned out in more traditional media forms should be emphasised and results in a more democratic type of balanced reporting. With public skepticism constantly trying to undermine mass media and journalism, the best way to counter this attitude is with innovative work that serves the public interest.

Responsibility. Holding personal and professional accountability towards the work produced is necessary for quality output and upholding the tenets of journalism.

With journalism being such a powerful tool for communication and change, it’s important to understand how you (as just one person or organisation!), can shape views and perceptions. When using digital technology, valuing responsibility should combine with strong ethics to make sure that the tools are used in an appropriate manner. Anything can be put out there online, or found, and maintaining accountability for responsible journalism ultimately makes it better.
