For my Facebook Live story, I previewed and discussed the upcoming AFL game between St Kilda and Sydney which is the inaugural AFL Pride game to celebrate and encourage confidence in sexual diversity in the AFL.
Originally I wanted to broadcast live from a press conference but I didn’t have access to the one held by the AFL and St.Kilda during the week and getting down to their training facility in Seaford wasn’t an option due to its distance away. So I decided to head to Etihad Stadium, where the game will be played on Saturday night, to do the live broadcast from in front of the stadium and the rainbow flag that had been raised midweek by St Kilda’s CEO Matt Finnis.
I felt my story probably would work best at an open training session down at Seaford so I could show the players training and report on who was out on the track, their form coming into the game as well as adding in information about the importance and features of the Pride Game.
So instead I thought heading to the venue where the game will be played would be the next best option and therefore I made the story more about the features of this special game and the positive and negative responses from the community and less about the build up to the game. Being at the ground itself allowed the audience to see the flag that was raised during the week and give an insight into the things that are being set up for the game.
Although it wasn’t my first option location wise, Etihad Stadium was the next best bet and was still a suitable location giving the game is to be played there. I think the story suited the Facebook Live platform as I was able to give up to date live information and speak about the events that were happening during the game and in the lead up. I also found that I could freely discuss both sides of the story and it allowed the best platform to speak live for an extended amount of time as well as showing off things that were happening and events at the scene, one of the best ways obviously to use Facebook Live.
