On 16 September 2021, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a landmark defence agreement with the US and UK.
The defence pact, known as AUKUS, aims to counter the rising military influence of China in the Indo-Pacific.
As part of the deal, Australia will acquire a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines for the first time, marking a significant development in the history of Australian defence.
Scott Morrison labelled the agreement an “historic opportunity” for the trilateral partners to strengthen their security in “uncertain times”.
Just hours after the announcement, China’s state-owned Global Television Network (GCTN) tweeted that China opposes any military expansionism by any country if it is not in line with UN principles.
Former Australian Ambassador to China and Indonesia Ric Smith said China is likely to “double down” on its criticism of Australia.
Renee Davidson speaks with Ric Smith about China’s reaction to AUKUS and its implications for Australia and Southeast Asia.
