Some check out the State Library, and some never leave

Socialising is at the core of Melbourne’s bustling CBD lifestyle. Iconic landmarks, tiny laneways, boutique cafes and eateries are all representations of the culture which lies deep within the city.

The State Library of Victoria is at the core of this romantically frantic way of life. It is the gateway to a world of information and memories, exhibitions and cultural programs. Once a place where children were not welcomed, it has quickly been adapted as a central meeting ground for university students, nine-to-fivers, tourists, families, protesters and chess lovers.

Sarah Aquilina asked locals and visitors why they love this space.

“We see it as a good public spot that everyone knows. We are just visiting so it was something we already knew of and there is WiFi here. We are actually waiting for some friends that we know from back home so we knew if we did need to contact them this would be a good spot. It is also a great place to just sit and people watch,” Alejandro said.

“We go to school in Washington DC and DC is just known for its public areas and green spaces and that is definitely something that you look for, somewhere where you can sit on a bench and watch people,” Miguel said.

“The other day we came by and they were having the marriage equality parade, which was something nice to see. Back home in DC the Supreme Court just legalised gay marriage nationally and this is something we saw a lot at home and (it’s nice) to see somewhere abroad where there’s a public space where people can express their opinions and be able to do that without any hesitations,” Miguel said.

“I work in the city so I come here about twice a week on my break. I often come here on the weekends as well. It is a great place to meet friends because it is so central,” Andrew said.

“I think it is almost one of the only public spaces in the city besides Fed Square. It is the only place I can really sit outside and look at all the people going by, I can just relax and be in my own head. I think the city is really lacking in public spaces and that’s why the State Library lawn is so great. Also the State Library is really great because you can be doing your own thing yet you are surrounded by so many people doing all sorts of things that are really different from you. You kind of feel like you are with the people of your city without having to have an intense chat with anyone,” Beth said.

“I go to the State Library about once a week on a trip to the city. I go in, I read a newspaper and look up books,” Travis said.

“It’s a really lovely spot, lots of students come by. People eat their lunch out on the lawn and often come over for a chat. It is just really nice,” Richard said.
