The latest data from Public Transport Victoria shows some of Melbourne’s most affluent suburbs have the highest rates of fare evasion.
New figures indicate the Sandringham train line has the highest level of fare evaders out of all lines, with an estimated 3% of commuters failing to tap on.
Daniel Bowen from the Public Transport Users Association says a lot of money is lost from fare evading.
Mr Bowen went on to say that the money lost could be used to improve the public transport network.
“The authorities really need to do more to make it easy to buy a ticket and pay your fare and hard to get away without paying your fare, that’s what really going to cut fare evasion in the long term,” he said.
It remains unclear why particular train lines appear to be showing higher rates of fare evasion.
