GetUp Condemn Proposed Plebiscite

With the government’s marriage equality legislation being presented in parliament this week, activist group GetUp called on the opposition to oppose the proposed plebiscite.

Under the government’s plan, $15 million of taxpayer’s money will go towards campaigning to both camps of opposition and supporters. GetUp campaigners said that the funds will go towards potentially discriminatory campaigns.

With polls showing that 75% of the public support marriage equality, GetUp called for the Labor Party to block the plebiscite. Sally Rug, the Marriage Equality Director at GetUp, said the proposed plebiscite should be condemned.

“The reason we’re having this discussion about a plebiscite is really politics at its worst. It’s Malcolm Turnbull unable to call the shots in his own party and having to pander to the far right faction,” Rug said.
