Gun violence in Victoria on the rise

Written by AChristensen

One hundred people have now been shot in Victoria since the beginning of last year, with the latest incident occurred in Broadmeadows on Sunday night.

The shooting comes amid an upsurge in gun-related crime in the last five years, with an investigation by The Age showing that known criminals were caught with firearms 755 times last year, compared to 143 times in 2011.

Australian university researcher Nick O’Brien – who’s also former head of Counter Terrorism at New Scotland Yard – said gun control is an issue across Australia.

“I think the issue comes, if you’ve got a quarter of a million guns swilling around Australia and you can get guns easily from overseas and you can buy them on the darknet for example, we’ve got to think of a strategy to get rid of those guns,” he said.

Mr O’Brien said government laws are adequate but there needs to be greater efforts to get illegal guns off the street.

“We need a national amnesty, like we did with Port Arthur. It needs to be well publicised and we should be looking at what other countries are doing.”
