Journalism Technologies Digital Tool Analysis (Joel Kennedy)

My involvement within RMIT’s Journalism Technologies class has been both informative and rewarding. Working with various multimedia forms, I strengthened my understanding of the professional journalism world, as well as refining my skills as an aspiring journalist.

Notably, Assessment 2 was most rewarding. my creation of the narrative ‘The Local Footy Spectacle’ allowed me to Engage with my local community. I delved into the aspects of local football in Victoria. I was able to create a short documentative video In which encapsulated a story of athletes and their drive in sport. As well as this, I crafted an interesting written aspect and social media posts to accompany the assessment.

In doing so, my skills as an aspiring journalist were broadened. I came away from this assessment with various interviewing and editing skills in which I will utilise going forward. I thoroughly enjoyed the freedom given in this assessment as I was able to explore an area of interest of mine and express creativity in a journalistic sense.

Alternatively, throughout this course I learnt new skills in which are now valuable assets of mine. Assessment one entailed a ‘data’ aspect, tasking students with working in programs such as Microsoft Excel and Flourish to produce stories. Previously, I had never worked with these programs so I was able to learn how to operate and produce various pieces of data to support my work.

Following suit with the ‘football’ theme, I chose to convey the differing crowd numbers in the AFL, one of Australia’s premier sporting competitions. I worked with alternating numbers, creating a graph through finding averages of crowd numbers throughout the years. Admittedly, this is a weakness of mine as a journalist. However, under the guidance of teachers I created an engaging and relevant news piece in which was appropriate to submit to city journal.  

Altogether, My skills as a journalist within the ‘Journalism Technologies’ program have significantly been strengthened, and my understanding broadened. Through differing assessments, I was challenged and asked to utilise new skills.   As a student who has completed this course, I implore other Journalism students to undertake in it. Learning new skills allowed for my stories and projects to become more engaging and interesting.
