Nokia comes for the smartphone throne

Written by Dylan Callard

Apple claimed another victory in the war for smartphone supremacy when they launched the iPhone 7 this morning in the wake of Samsung recalling 2.5 million Galaxy S7 smartphones.

In what came as a surprise to the South Korean tech giant, the new ‘exploding battery’ feature introduced to try and combat a seemingly losing battle against Apple’s iPhone was not well received by its customers, leading to the recall last week.

In light of this, it appears a new challenger is poised to emerge from the doldrums and announce itself as a serious challenger to monopoly that Apple and Samsung currently hold in the smartphone world.

The humble Nokia is back! And set to release a new, never before seen Android phone, coming out by the end of 2016. Although there has been much speculation on design and features, HMD Global, of which Nokia is a subsidiary have remained pretty coy on the release. But what they have done is have pledge to spend over $500 million to support marketing of new Nokia branded phones.

But who really cares about all the new features? Not us. Here are some of the redeeming features from Nokia’s of a bygone that we would love to see in their new range of phones.

1) INDESTRUCTABILITY
How many times have you cracked your iPhone screen, only to replace it at you local Asian market, crack it again and then be told by Apple you have voided the warranty. How many times has your Samsung battery exploded, torching all your belongings in the process? We know…..we know. The Nokia 3310, perhaps Nokia’s most famous model, was virtually indestructible. Take a hammer to it, drop it off a 10 story building, submerge it in water, nothing could stop that thing. A phone that never breaks, never needs replacing? I know I’d want one.

2) AUTO-CORRECT (or lack there of)
We’ve all been there. You tell your boss to meet up for sex instead of meet up at 6. No auto-correct means no embarrassing errors. Lets get back to what really matters, abbreviating your sentences to make them as short as possible. Vowels are over-rated anyway. Srsly.

3) BATTERY LIFE
Battery doesn’t explode. Check. Battery lasts for a week. Check. You could spend $184 dollars to buy a portable smartphone charger, Or you could charge your Nokia, stay out for a week and never have to worry about your phone. No aeroplane mode, no microwaving your iPhone to ‘supercharge’ it, just a reliable battery for your everyday needs.

4) PRICE
The iPhone 7 is set to retail in Australian stores at $1079, while the Samsung S7 retails between $800-850. The new Nokia Android is rumoured to be around the $500 price point. In the meantime, grab yourself an ever-reliable 3310 for just $18.

5) SNAKE
It cant be a Nokia if it doesn’t have the greatest mobile game ever invented. Sure, Apple recently had fans in a spin when they announced that a Nintendo game would be compatible with the iPhone 7, but the simple fact remains, it just isn’t Snake.
