Online shopping a man’s world

Written by Abbey Casey

New figures reveal Aussie men are spending more than twice as much as woman online.

According to Sensis, the average man in 2014 spent a whopping $6,500 online, while women spent just under $2,500.

Rob Tolliday, from Sensis, said men were spending on more expensive items.

“Men are more likely to buy more computer hardware, videos games and take-away food while women are more likely to buy cosmetics and groceries.”

Frequent online shopper and young mum, Jaclyn Guzzardi said getting out of the house to shop was a good social activity for new mums.

“Online shopping is a big procrastination tool mainly for me to find things I’d like to buy in-store before I make the trip.”

But graduate engineer, Austin Gardner, said the statistics weren’t surprising and admited to shopping more online than his female friends.

“It’s a lot quicker to just browse and buy online,” he said.

“Often you see men just sitting around on their phones at shopping centres because its boring to spend all our time there browsing when we can buy all our electronics and clothes online.”

But with the growing use of online shopping, Mr Tolliday said the competition for Australian local retailers is large going up against online giants such as Amazon and ASOS.

“Twenty one percent of Australian consumers’ online purchases are going overseas and this highlights the growing problem for many Aussie retailers who are facing competition from abroad.”

But with 61 percent of Australian consumers making online purchases this year, the new GST proposal next month is set to be another game changer in online consumerism.
