Unless graduates have better access to work experience in Australia, universities will struggle to attract international students, a new study has found.

The study – conducted by Deakin University researchers – reveals opportunities to work after graduating have become increasingly important when international students decide where to study.

Each year billions of dollars are contributed to the Australian economy from international students.

Senior research fellow at Deakin University Dr Cate Gribble said the main problem many graduates face with employment in Australia is their visa.

“A lot of employers require applicants to have permanent residency,” she said.

The research project – called “Investigating mismatches between Australian international graduate destinations and skill shortages” – looks at international graduate employability in accounting, engineering and nursing (which are currently experiencing skills shortages).

Dr Gribble said students were interviewed “just before they graduate to find out what their plans are and then … 12 months after”.

Employers are also looking for graduates who are able to communicate well, possess solid networks and have a lot of work experience.

“Some international students would be aware of the difficulties they may face when applying for a job, but a lot underestimate how hard it is to find one,” Dr Gribble said.

She said universities, employers and the government should provide better work experience opportunities for international students to ensure Australia remains an attractive study destination.
