Hacktivism, the government and you

The Socialist Alternative hosted a meeting last month, discussing a growing government crackdown on hacktivists around Australia, and what people can do to educate themselves about the digital space.

Andrey Rodionov reports.

Encouraging online awareness, the hacktivism meeting talked about the importance of online groups like Anonymous and their splinter group, LulzSec who’s 24-year-old self-proclaimed leader, Australian, Matthew Flannery was arrested by Sydney police just days before the meeting. Lead speaker at the meeting and IT person, Jo Ronaldson, says the Australian government’s attitude towards hacktivists has only gotten worse.“There’s a real attempt to crackdown and demonize on online activism at the moment. So I think that it’s important for people to be aware that this sort of thing is happening.” Attendees were encouraged to download the CryptoParty handbook, learn about their online rights and get informed about government policies involving mandatory data retention.
