Academic recognised for Stella book

An RMIT University academic has won The Stella Prize for women’s literature.

Matilda Marozzi reports.

“Author Carrie Tiffany found herself $50,000 richer  after her novel Mateship with Birds won the Stella Prize last Tuesday. The award was founded to raise the profile of women’s writing after no females were shortlisted in the 2009 or 2011 Miles Franklin Awards. Before the announcement, fellow nominee Lisa Jacobson said being shortlisted has already made a difference to her career. “When a book gets shortlisted for a prize of this calibre, it’s really the difference between trotting along and being a writer and then really being placed on the map.” Ms Tiffany donated part of her winnings to the other shortlisted authors.
