mental health is set to be a powerful issue in the electorate of Corangamite in the upcoming federal election.

Sarah Henderson MP has joined the lobby for a new headspace facility in response to mental health issues in the Corangamite Electorate.

Along with the Bellarine Community Health (BCH), Ms Henderson is lobbying for the Western Victorian PHN – which will receive $37 million over the next three years as part of the $1.45 billion allocated to mental health services – to support a new stand-alone headspace facility for young people, located in Bellarine.

Current headspace services have become limited due to population growth in the electorate causing local concern for the treatment of mental health of people residing in the area.

Fifty-three people suicided in the area between 2014-16.

The Australian government has provided the BCH with $3 million to improve existing facilities in Port Lonsdale.

Suicide is the leading cause of death in young people in Australia.
