Banyule City Council, which manages north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne including Ivanhoe, Rosanna and Heidelberg, have amended their gambling policy to better address issues surrounding gambling addiction.
The key changes related to phasing out language such as ‘problem gambling’ to destigmatise gambling addiction.
According to the Head of Knowledge and Policy at the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, Tony Phillips, terms such as ‘problem gambling’ is not effective in helping some people.
“[They] work around an idea that when people have problems from their gambling or harm from their gambling, it’s actually their fault”, he said.
Banyule City Council’s changes have been supported by the VRGF for being in line with current best practice.
