Montana gives European catwalks a miss

Montana Cox has her feet firmly planted back on Australian soil, after giving European fashion shows a miss this season.

Australia’s Next Top Model winner has returned home from working in New York.

Stand against Starvation

Cox has decided not walk in the European Spring/Summer fashion shows this year because of the immense pressure to be unhealthily thin.

Cox’s stand is sending a loud message to all young girls and women.

“You should never have to starve
yourself for fashion.”

“The fashion industry’s perception of a healthy body is extremely warped from reality,” Cox said.

“It is not a healthy outlook on today’s society.”

“Something needs to be done, these girls are scarily thin, you could almost snap them.” she said

It is because of the pressure to fit into the clothes the “clothes are not made to fit the girls, the girls have to fit the clothes.”

The way the fashion industry works needs to be changed.  Healthy BMI rules need to be taken seriously.
Designers need to make clothes to fit healthier body shapes; releasing the pressure these young girls feel to starve themselves.

The pressure to be sickly thin does not only affect the models. It has a large impact on impressionable teenagers and women, who idolise these girls and the ‘desired’ image they represent. Potentially causing body image issues including eating disorders.

“Part of me feels sad for how sick and skinny models are…but if they are perceived as beautiful, it makes me think it must be today’s reality,” said 19 year old student, Lucy. “I wish we could go back in time to when a more fuller figure was seen as beautiful.”
