Weideman’s world as Dees end finals drought

Written by Dylan Carmody

For the first time in 12 years, Melbourne will find themselves playing finals footy in September, and young forward Sam Weideman says he could not be more excited for the challenges that lay ahead.

The Dees knocked off the Eagles in a Sunday thriller, locking in their first finals series since 2006, with scenes of jubilation and relief after the final siren.

“It was unbelievable, it was just an amazing feeling. Pure elation,” Weideman said.

The win marked not only the end of Melbourne’s finals drought but a welcome return for Weideman too, who hadn’t appeared for the red and blue since Round 15.

“I was happy with how I played. The main thing for me was creating a contest in the air, and being able to kick one early was good, gets the confidence up. I was pretty happy with the day, but I was happier with the win.”

It was a solid day for the 21-year-old, who has a golden opportunity after it was revealed star forward Jesse Hogan would miss the rest of the season through injury.

“I was pretty shattered for the big fella…but yeah, it is a good opportunity, and I’ve had a pretty consistent year in the VFL, so I just want to grab this opportunity and keep it going.”

Fox Footy’s Matt Balmer believes the youngster now has the chance to secure a long-term place in the team, especially with the leading goal scorer on the sidelines.

“Jesse out is huge for Melbourne. Sam has been that sort of fringe player, but now Jesse is out, it’s a huge opportunity for him,” he said.

“His VFL form shows that he is far too good to be playing VFL, so he’s an AFL footballer for mine.”

With Melbourne now having the chance to book a home elimination final, Weideman will be looking to properly cement his place in September.
